Waking State Design is a contemporary graphic design firm with roots firmly planted in traditional design. Our goal for every project is to create timeless visual communications utilizing the language of color, imagery and words, beauty and function, to achieve a balanced visual environment.
WSD provides complete graphic design solutions that enhance and add value to our projects, from concept to finished product, in identity; print and digital media; signage, wayfinding and environmental graphic design; color design; event and exhibit design; photography; and art direction.
In our experience working with a wide variety of clients, successfully producing designs for diverse audiences, we recognize that the process is organic. Our designs are informed by extensive research. We study the philosophical, historical, technical and cultural aspects behind each project, as well as the intended audience and usage. This, together with direct communication and collaboration with our clients, guides us in creating meaningful visual languages that are specific to each entity and that define a clear and unified brand to the user or observer.

Tamara has over 18 years professional experience as a
graphic designer, a fine artist, and a photographer. Previous to forming Waking State Design, Ms. Gould was Associate and the Graphic Arts Director for The Jerde Partnership International, Inc., where she was responsible for print and environmental graphics components for national and international developments. Before joining The Jerde Partnership, she worked for Sussman/Prejza Inc. and Eric Owen Moss Architects. Her range of experiences in working for some of the premiere design firms in Los Angeles is an invaluable asset.
Tamara holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Fine Arts from the University of California at Los Angeles. She studied for one year at the l'Accademia di Belle Arti in Venice, Italy. After graduation from UCLA, she was a member of the founding class at the experimental design school, the Santa Monica College of Design, Art and Architecture. Ms. Gould’s classic training as an artist can be seen in her aesthetic, intuitive and fresh approach to each project. Tamara’s artistic vision and disciplined design expertise are expressed in design solutions that manifest the essence of a project through a meaningful visual language. |

An artist and a designer, Juan’s experience and abilities in color usage and three dimensional design and construction, give him a great range and versatility across many materials and their usage in different mediums and processes in the built environment. Juan’s foundation as a photographer brings an underlying sense of drama and dimensionality to the work.
Juan is a member of the International Association of Color Consultants of North America. He has won international and national awards for his work in design and conceptual art. His work has been selected to a number of museum group exhibitions, including the prestigious Fowler Museum of Cultural History at UCLA, and the Museum of Latin American Art in Miami, FL. Juan has a BA in Photography from The USC School of Cinema-Television, he has also completed a Fellowship in Design for Media at IMSC of The USC School of Engineering. He was a member of the founding class at the experimental design school, the Santa Monica College of Design, Art and Architecture. Juan is an accomplished photographer and Production Designer/Art Director having designed for film, television, photography, theater, commercial and residential environments. He has been a key collaborator to Waking State Design since the company’s inception in 2003. His work with Waking State Design includes three dimensional design, color consulting, research, conceptual design, materials selections and specifications, and project management. |

Anissa is a website programmer and photographer living in Los Angeles. With a diverse clientele and 15 years of experience, she has programmed various e-commerce, non-profit, government, entertainment, and social websites. Programming experience with .Net, C#, PHP, Cold Fusion, My Sql and MS SQL, and with various CMS applications including Drupal. |
